PETALING JAYA: ENGIE, the leading global energy company, has expressed its commitment to strengthening its role in Malaysia's energy transition by targeting increased participation in renewable energy projects between 2025 and 2030.
Ernesto Rua, Head of Renewables for Southeast Asia at ENGIE, noted that the Group’s global team of over 98,000 across 30 countries aims to become the world's Best Energy Transition Utility company by 2030.
“In Southeast Asia, the company focuses on helping businesses reduce carbon emissions through practical and integrated clean energy solutions, including solar energy, cooling systems, energy efficiency and clean power supply.
"Malaysia has emerged as a key market in this strategy, driven by progressive government policies, increasing corporate demand for green energy, as well as exciting infrastructure investment opportunities," he said when contacted by Utusan Malaysia.
In an effort to support Malaysia's goal of achieving 70 percent renewable energy capacity by 2050, ENGIE is currently implementing several major projects such as Kerian Solar, a large-scale solar power plant with a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) and BKH Solar, a 30 MW solar project.
"In addition, ENGIE is also actively involved in national programs such as Large-Scale Solar (LSS) and Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS). The company also works with commercial customers through various methods such as on-premises solar installations, virtual power purchase agreements (vPPAs) and the use of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)," he said.
Globally, ENGIE is also a major player in the biomethane sector, with production exceeding 1 TWh per year in Europe and trading over 6 TWh (terawatt hours is an equivalent to 6 billion kilowatt hours, kWh) annually to international customers.
"The potential to expand this expertise to the Southeast Asian region is currently being actively explored.”
“What sets ENGIE apart is its comprehensive approach from project development and energy financing structuring to the implementation of solutions on the ground that gives clients and prospects confidence in reliable, economical, and large-scale energy solutions towards net zero.”
"Through these various initiatives, ENGIE is optimistic that it can make a significant contribution to Malaysia's clean energy landscape and support the country to become a regional leader in renewable energy over the next decade," he said.
Rua added that ENGIE’s renewable energy team is actively developing and expanding project portfolios in Malaysia with a primary focus on large-scale solar projects.
"Recently, we have submitted a proposal under the LSS5+ programme with a capacity of 99.99 MW and are currently preparing to participate in CRESS. We are also exploring opportunities for LSS6, once the details of the programme are announced," he said.
